I dont count calories, I only count macros. This macro-counting - TopicsExpress

I dont count calories, I only count macros. This macro-counting thing, aka IIFYM (if it fits your macros), is the latest trend in nutrition/dieting. Heres the problem with the above statement...every macro has a caloric value, therefore you cannot count macros without ultimately counting calories (unless you arent good with basic math). You can, however, count calories with no regard for where they are coming from and not really paying attention to the macronutrient source (protein, carbohydrate or fat) Because both are important in achieving results here is how I do it: How many calories does MY body (or clients) need in a given day? Once I determine my/client bodys caloric needs then I can decide how to split them up amongst the macronutrients. This is where it gets tricky and where you will find a coach is a handy person to have around. The nutrient partitioning is the scientific part of nutrition. And despite what coaches may tell you...its most often a SWAG (scientific wild ass guess). You go with your best educated guess based on the details about the individual but there is no magic formula that is on any website or in ANY coachs head. You dont know if a plan works until you actually TRY it. Then you tweak it. If youre only counting macros make sure your macros are in the proper caloric range. And always keep in mind that all foods are not created equal. For instance: a pop tart and a yam have very different effects on the body. Whole, nutrient dense foods always win!
