I dont have much of a desire to waste my breath responding to Bill Maher and the like, but two quick comments: 1) His command of basic, factual information is so wrong that it shouldnt take much to see through to his profound racism. For example, in dismissing over a hundred million Muslims in Bangladesh, he cites the example of a move about.... India. (Slumdog Millionaire). As if all those brown people, all those South Asians, are the same. 2) Forget that he gets Islam wrong ,that he gets religion wrong. Maher actually gets liberalism wrong. He is either ignorant, or deliberately ignores the fact that the roots of classic liberalism were intertwined with colonialism, that the founding fathers of liberalism made it perfectly clear that they were not talking about the equality of all human beings, but rather of all elite white Euro-American males. So he gets his liberalism wrong as well. If we are to move to the promised land of the innate sanctity and dignity of all human life, be it rooted in a secular or religious framework, that work is one that will call for each of us to examine the prejudice implicit in each of our own worldviews. rawstory/rs/2014/10/cornel-west-battles-bill-maher-dont-judge-all-of-islam-as-right-wing/ #BillMaher #CornelWest #liberalism #Islam
