I dont know how many years ago its been, but I remember, for years, leaving the day after Thanksgiving and flying to the city where wed open The Young Messiah. Wed gather on Friday and run through the program, then wed open on Saturday night and proceed to play through, about, December 15th or so. Wed play huge crowds (for us anyway) mostly in NBA venues around the US. Im not a big proponent of spending a lot of time pondering the past, but we had some great times during the years we sang the music from this great work that was masterfully spun into contemporary settings. The first version was produced by Paul Mills and the second, by Greg Nelson. I was pilfering my stack of CDs the other day. Years ago, somebody gave me a great big CD player that stored about 400 discs. I dont think I had that many in the player, but I was close. Anyway, I pulled all of them out because I discovered that I could put 6 at a time in my car player and it would record every one of them onto a hard drive in the car. What??? I vowed to only put classics on the hard drive - recordings that I consider to be timeless. The sad truth is, that many of these that are so considered are out of print and almost impossible to find anymore. But The New Young Messiah was one that was a dead ringer for a classic in my mind. Along with it, especially this time of year, An Evening in December by First Call with guest soloists (including yours truly . . . man, my voice sounds . . . uh . . . young!) Ive enjoyed listening to these projects again. Did you ever see a performance of The Young Messiah? Tell me about it. Who was with you? What do you remember about it? WW
