I dont know if Im any different then anyone else here, but I spent most of my AF career in the Air Training Command (ATC) excluding one tour in the Alaskan Air Command and two in USAFE. I grew up in the Air Force with a lot of regimentation and follow the rules to the letter mentality. Over the years, I was aware that there was four distinct categories of people in our AF, Airmen, Junior NCOs, Senior NCOs and Officers. For the most part to get along, you stayed within your group. At major ATC and AAC bases this was exceptable and expected behavior. I arrived at Kalkar as a junior grade Tech. Sergeant and was overwhelmed by the fact that everybody treated you as an equal. Full Col. CMSgt or Airman, everybody seemed to be important. Most of us Junior NCOs filled positions that we would not have at a large base. When you mix satisfaction with your job and the excellent Quality of life at Kalkar, you cannot miss. My only regret was not extending my tour and staying longer. I remember some people saying that a tour at Kalkar killed your career and I guess I kind of believed that and wanted to get back into the mainstream.
