I dont know why, but it makes me giggle every time I drive by the sign for the town of Hygiene, CO (Google it if you dont believe me lol). While it was a beautiful drive, it was also rather sad. The road up to Estes Park is one of many that were washed away by the Sept. flooding. We sat for a good 1/2 hour in road reconstruction traffic, and I looked out my window at the river, which still has household items and debris in and around it. There was 1/2 of a twisted ladder, a bucket, and what really hit me, a window frame stuck on a big boulder. I would say for a good 2 miles, there was nothing but destruction. The first couple houses we passed had huge piles of debris next to them and red uninhabitable signs on them. At one house, someone had spray painted WE ARE OK on it. Around the curve was the house across the river that the fire department, using their ladder truck, strung a wire across and rescued the family with baskets. It actually reminded me a bit of the area around Mt. Saint Helens after she blew (minus all of the trees)....kind of a moonscape with all of the boulders thrown around. I looked in my mirror and noticed that the kids were praying (4 buses full of 14 year olds from the catholic church going to the YMCA retreat for their confirmation (I think). And then just over the hill was a herd of elk grazing in a meadow. We had a great trip, except when I ran out of washer fluid....
