I dont normally go on a big rant about most things, but this one with a solution so ridiculously obvious that it cant be helped... I honestly dont understand why the Big 3 of Canada and CRTC are flailing at what Netflix is doing. Learn from Netflix to do better, and as a Canadian consumer, theres plenty to be desired from what the Canadian TV industry has done so far. And it doesnt take snooping into Netflix or Googles user records to do it. The TV providers just need to take a look at their own records of depleting consumers - the people cutting the cords in favour of streaming content that can easily be found on Netflix or YouTube and similar services. People dont want to be forced to buy TV packages they dont want for one channels worth of content. They probably dont even want the a al carte format either. Stop trying to meet the old status quo, and take a good long look at the future. The old model is long dead. Insisting on maintaining such a high level of cultural content when the content is so terrible that no one actually wants to watch it beyond any sort of facepalming cringe worthy irony. Instead, invest in actually producing GOOD content. Quality over quantity. Id rather watch a show like Flashpoint over Arctic Air, or The Listener over Republic of Doyle any day of the week. Two are shows that, even though set in Toronto, could have taken place anywhere in North America. The others are so painfully Canadian its laughable. Not at all something Id want to watch. And that does NOT make me any less Canadian. And while youre And for the Big 3, dont just make a Netflix copy that is only available to your subscribers. Sure, make it cheaper for your subscribers, but open it up to everyone, at a pricepoint-to-content range that would make people want to come to your service, versus theirs. Youll get more takers than not. And while were at it, cant the CBC take a look at another national broadcaster that has not only made it work, but is thriving: the BBC? Until then, Im staying on Netflix with my cord firmly cut.
