I dont think Jesus died because God demanded a sacrifice, but because we did! We were demanding a sacrifice, it seems, to deal with all the guilt and shame we felt..God wasnt guilting or shaming us, but we were, and we were feeling that we deserved to pay for our sins, we had the bloodlust, not God! I think of how sometimes people get into addictions and literally punish themselves because of the gnawing shame and self-loathing..and Jesus entered into our system of thinking, He submitted Himself to our desires and said, okay, Ill do that for you, Ill be the scapegoat you feel you need so that you can live with yourself, Ill absorb and deal with the guilt and shame, and in so doing Ill also free you from that whole way of thinking, because Ill prove that I love you as you are, where you are, warts and all, that you are totally and unconditionally and eternally LOVED and ACCEPTED, and that will heal you of your tit for tat, someone must pay syndrome and show you that with me, people really do get off scott-free, scandalous grace really is true, you really dont have to pay, you really are released from the burden of your sins, you really wont be rejected if you fail, you really are accepted without reservation no matter what you do, think or become!
