I dont want to keep your walls flooded with deep, sad thoughts--I know many of you go to Facebook as an escape--but one more thought is worth sharing and thinking over regarding Robin Williams and mental illness: He did not kill himself. He really didnt. Rather, just as someone dies from cancer or heart disease or a vicious attack by a lion unleashed by a magical board game, Robin Williams died of depression. It killed him. And thats a crucial distinction that we collectively need to make as we work our way through the stigma and misunderstanding surrounding mental illness. Talk about depression; acknowledge it; embrace it as a common part of the human condition--like cancer and diabetes and allergies, stubbed toes, and Alzheimers; learn about it; and be part of society that treats it not like leprosy but rather with understanding, identifying, and collective empathy and treatment. And now I return to my normal Facebook activities--music, silliness, and satirical commentary on the news cycle. Rock on, comrades.
