I encourage all those concerned about the potential closure of Huston Early Childhood Center (HECC) to attend the school board meeting on Monday evening, July 21 at 5:30. The interim Superintendent will be presenting her recommendation to the board to be voted upon during the meeting. This is an open meeting, which means public comments/questions can be made/asked. This proposal is to close the school THIS school year and move all students from HECC to Blackwell Elementary School. Please keep in mind that teachers report in three weeks. I encourage you to ask teachers at both schools, BES and HECC, to provide their viewpoints to gain more understanding of the potential consequences. This is copied from a friend of mine. I have to admit Im very shocked and saddened at the possibility of sticking the little children to be with the big kids. Keep in mind some that attend 4k or Kindergarten are just beginning in their school years and leaving Mom and Dad is hard enough...throw in 700 kids who are all older, some are not so nice as we all have experienced in our LATER years of school...as well as a huge school is alot on these little ones. They are supposed to be learning about socializing and academics, there are crucial keys that need implemented at these early ages and being a preschool teacher myself at one time I can honestly say putting the 4, 5 and 6 year olds with the big kids could not only damage their academic future but their socialization skills as well. I feel terrible for what all our teachers have endured these past months and now adding in this is just beyond ridiculous. We are losing kids to Peckham and Braman and for what????? Shouldnt our community be able to come together and listen to each other?? Teachers are one of the most unappreciated, underpaid, job titles out there and throwing them around literally like they mean nothing is just unacceptable. Things need to change and one of them is keeping Barbara Ihrig. She loves her work and loves those kids more than anyone knows. Please if you feel the same, let your voice be heard and come to the meeting....the little ones cant speak so its our job to speak for them as parents/aunts/uncles/grandparents/caregivers etc......
