For centuries, the Crimea has been Russias access point to the Black Sea and thence to the Mediterranean. Russia is very short on ports that are open year-round, so the importance of a Black Sea port is magnified. We have seen this story play out before in the Crimean War of 1853-56. Given Putins KGB background, I see the possibility of a paranoid attitude toward the pro-western government in the Ukraine, and a subsequent survival by any means possible justification for seizing this critical seaway.
