I find it vexing that so many people think in terms of black or white (no, Im not referring to race) when so much of our life is lived in grey areas. Must some always adhere to a strict belief that there exists a line, and everything exists on one side of that line or the other? My belief is that lines are meant to be crossed, blurred; that we might realize our greatest passions, accomplishments, and free thought by crossing these lines, taking risks, obliterating the conformity of those rigid beliefs that bind us, as the rain would likewise bleed the colors of a childs chalk hopscotch board on the sidewalk. To stand unwavering on one side or the other of these lines is to be imprisoned by them. While one might refuse to acknowledge the existence of grey areas, it is my firm belief that some of the most free thought is born not of the dark, black clouds that precede an impending storm, nor of cotton-white clouds one might witness as they stand in relief against the azure sky of a bright September morn, but instead within the grey mists of the dawn of morning promise. Only within grey areas does truth exist. Karen Smith
