I firmly believe that after the riots of the 60s Berkeley should have one of the best trained riot forces in the country. From what I witnessed, from what I heard, from pictures I saw, (especially the one with a cop kidney smashing a woman with his baton) and from what I read, the Berkeley police failed tonight. They could have intelligently realized that the vast majority of protesters may have been loud and obnoxious, but not violent. But they didnt. The show of force tonight, as if the police were at war with civilians, was absolutely unnecessary. Frankly, it looked a bit like a Hollywood version of a movie riot, with earnest but hapless protesters overwhelmed by the invading army. It was a bit embarrassing to witness.
