I first met Rhonda about 12 years ago when she was researching the selkie legends for a novel she was writing. We lost touch and this summer I got a friend request for her on Facebook. We enjoyed chatting and there was a connection right away. But I thought, dont be stupid, shes gorgeous, and has good eyesight, why the hell would she be interested in me? We sent long e-mails and it started getting serious. But I tried to resist, thinking it was ridiculous, as Rhonda lives in New York State and I dont. She was already planning a trip to Orkney and I had offered her a room in my house, as is my custom. Nothing more; just an act of kindness and not unique. We flirted and we both started to get the message; she feels the same. I didnt want to risk losing a friendship, so neither one said anything; although it was the elephant in the room. One night, late (5 hour time difference; I live in the future) we were sending songs back and fore. I decided to cast the die and sent this song; London Grammar doing a cover of the old Chris Isaak song. It expressed how I felt; falling in love but trying hard not to and being scared of loving again. The dam burst and all the repressed emotions were unleashed. We Skype every night, usually, and our relationship has deepened into something truly beautiful. I love and adore her more than words can say. We have kept it secret until now as we wanted Rhonda to be able to tell her family in person over Christmas. I am so happy. Rhonda will come here for a couple of months this summer, Ill go over to the US and then, hopefully, she plans to come and live with me in Orkney. We are so head-over-heels in love I dont know which way is up any more. And I dont care either. Thank you London Grammar, and thank you Rhonda, my love.
