I first would like to remind Alaskans that if it wasnt for Alaskas first people signing on the dotted line in support of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), there would be no Trans Alaska Pipeline (TAPS). It is not customary for AFN to endorse political candidates, and the thoughtful debate regarding candidates was respectful, and the endorsements were made in the spirit of what is best for Alaska Native people. The endorsement of Walker/Mallott was not unexpected. Governor Sean Parnell chose to appeal the Katie John case after speaking to AFN last year, he appealed Indian Child Welfare Act cases which tribes tried to intervene, and he will continue to use the courts to undermine my people. I will never understand his motives. I personally would of liked that AFN not endorse either Senatorial candidate. I am no fan of Mark Begich, and I cant stand Dan Sullivan. But, I will more than likely plug my nose and fill in the oval for Dan Sullivan. It wont be because I support him.
