I found myself back at a lovely new grocery store yesterday, in - TopicsExpress

I found myself back at a lovely new grocery store yesterday, in its outdoor cafe. I met an old friend and squinted in the sun as we talked about feminism, conflict resolution, and the phrase equal marriage. She told me how in 1970 a bank refused to give a married (straight) couple a loan based on the womans income even though it was higher than her husbands. She told me how women couldnt live off campus at her college, how it wasnt acceptable for her to travel with her boyfriend. Her experiences, she said, had made her eschew marriage, since it had previously been wrapped up in her inequality. Think about all of this in relation to the phrase marriage equality. Then I found myself reading this essay In Praise of the Threat by Rebecca Solnit, who wrote about equal marriage as a threat to what was historically a property transaction where the husband was owner and the wife possession. Yes. I praise that threat. Let us one day all be persons.
