I found myself in a similar situation the other day. A woman was having a go at her six or seven year old son who, in her defense, seemed a bit of a prick. She was however being rather harsh (not violently, though there was a bit of shaking, and she told him she was going to abandon him there, which is a horrible thing to say to a child), and made a very bad impression to me. I fooled around on the aisle thinking whether I should intervene in some way or not, but I really didnt know what I could possibly do, and the child seemed way out of control to allow me to put all the blame on the mother. At some point as she was walking away he grabed some juice, stated running towards her and fell down. I approached him, got on my knee and asked him if he was alright. He immediately turned to a shy, silent boy, noded and I told him You shouldnt be running around, you may hurt yourself. The mother approached and picked him up; she seemed to have composed herself just by realising that there was a third person witnessing the whole scene. They both walked away in silence. Though it didnt seem to me like a legitimate threat against the childs safety, the whole incident troubled me all the way home.
