I got a rather frantic text last night from some Grand Haven friends of mine who attend the debate in Spring Lake last night between Sarah Howard and Sen. Arlen Meekhof. They were appalled by the comments and attitude of Meekhof. Truth be told, I used to interact with Arlen when he was a Rep. and I was a staffer in the House. He was pleasant enough. We spoke mostly about our families and our grandkids. What happened then was he became enamored with his hero Dave Agema. Both of these guys proclaim their Christianity. Good for them. But what I found is that they believe in the God of Wrath. Most people I know believe in the God of Love. Arlen has now pigeon holed himself in the odd world of bigotry, homophobia and relegating women into a subservient roll in society. I dont think good people need to have someone like him as their Senator. Im encouraging everyone in the West Shore area to say NO to Meekhof next Tuesday. Maybe we can begin to remove his brand of hatred from our local politics and get back to some sane discourse and dialogue.
