I guess that paid parking is inevitable and so my letter last - TopicsExpress

I guess that paid parking is inevitable and so my letter last Saturday to Guernsey Press was suggesting a fairer and much simpler solution than just hitting Town workers with a huge charge for the long term spaces. I suggested keeping the current parking clocks and have all drivers who wish to park in any of the suggested paid zones pay for and download a PAID disc from the States website. The disc has the car registration number printed on it and would be displayed in the window just like the current insurance discs. It simply shows that the driver has paid for the privilege of parking in the paid zone. The disc could cost somewhere in the region of £25 - £50 and would be an annual charge. No meters, no gates, no emptying ticket machines, no having to have the correct change, no £1300 charges! I also suggested that hire cars are exempt as tourists should be encouraged. If you dont need to go to Town and park in one of the paid bays, you do not need to get a disc. There could even be a sliding scale on the type of car - larger cars could pay more than smaller cars - all fairly simply administered by one annual payment on the internet. I have no doubt that paid parking will be here to stay and Im not even necessarily against it if it generates much needed funding for the states (lets face it, if they need the money, they will get it one way or another) so I feel that we just need the right solution - fair, simple and at a cost which motorists at least accept.
