I had a customer today...a middle aged man and his two younger kids. One little girl and one little boy. They were all smiling...well except for his little girl. He came to the register and put a pair of pink John Deere boots on the counter...he asked if he could leave them there for a second, but he was certain he was going to buy them they just wanted to look a little longer. I told him yes sir not a problem and then I asked the little girl if those were her new boots and that I really liked them...she informed me she did not want new boots and that she loved hers and they were just fine...her dad started laughing and he took her boot off her foot and placed it on the counter. Same exacted boots he was about to buy again. He showed me the holes and said she needs new boots, but she is very upset with me for making her buy new ones. I told her I also thought she needed a new pair so her feet would stay warm and dry...I said you can keep your old boots and these can be your good boots (I wear mine until the soles are flopping)...she smiled and they walked off. A few minutes passed and they came back to my register...again she didnt look to thrilled. Her dad swiped his card and I asked if she was still upset. He said she was still really pissed at him, but he wanted to make sure she had a new pair of boots. You could tell they didnt have a lot of money, but he was doing what he could. He said she can be a little sassy and she knows what she wants. I started laughing and said well thatll be good for you in her future. He said their mom left us and she showed up after three years this weekend...needless to say her sassy side came out...he said shes only 7, but she understands...she looked her momma in the eyes and said I only got one thing to say to you and thats that my dog had babies and she didnt leave her puppies and she walked away... I didnt really know what to say...being in a work place you have to watch your mouth so as nicely as possible I said kids too understand, they are sponges, she knows whats right and whats wrong and you sir seem to be doing a great job at raising your babies and I hope yall have a Merry Christmas...I said you dont see many kids come in here and turn something down...she knows your doing your very best being a mom and dad...she has everything she needs and obviously her wants arent something that she lets bother her...she will come around and stop being mad I promise !!! He smiled and said I sure hope so. What a blessing that those babies have a daddy like that !!! It breaks my heart seeing kids in that situation, but he seems to be doing a mighty fine job at raising them alone and keeps it simple. Thats how life should be. Kids should respect their elders and parents need to show children things dont come free and take care of things...work for everything...cherish the small stuff...and dont live beyond your means...simple life! God Bless him and his family !!! It made my heart happy and sad all at the same time.
