I had a long chat with my daughter about quality of life issues as they pertain to me and my current situation. Heres what I asked her. Based on all I read regarding effects & after effects of this current radiation therapy, I have some serious misgivings. My cancer is very small and classified as a Grade 1. Grade 1 cancers grow quite slowly, I am led to believe. They also dont change their grade, even if they migrate to other sites. From what I have been able to learn so far regarding side & future effects of the cure that the oncologist assures my off, I have my concerns. The side effects can be, loss of taste, either temporarily or permanently, temporary or permanent inability to consume whole foods, ( i.e. an external feeding port), inability to fully open my mouth, severe damage to my vocal chords, inability to breath, (requiring a tracheotomy), and the list just goes on. All this to just stay alive. I am going to have a discussion with my doctor tomorrow concerning these issues. I am inclined to move in the direction of letting the cancer slowly doing its thing and address the end of life problems whenever they catch up with me as opposed to living a Cured Life which is actually hell on earth. Your thoughts are most welcome.
