I had a moment early this morning, between the 3:30 am bathroom break and the pets ritual awakening of me, where I experienced the restless leg syndrome that amazes and amuses my wife. Shell chuckle some mornings and tell me that I was running in my sleep, but the only evidence I normally get is if Im wearing long pajama bottoms. The legs will be rolled up to my knees Tom Sawyer style, and Ill I can do is just chuckle with Jen and roll them back down. This morning I was in the midst of a dream (yes...it is partially one of those Facebook dream posts). But unlike years (decades) past I wasnt running from anything - no bad guys, bullies, apocalyptic shit, fire & brimstone, happiness.....not running away. I was running on the wet compacted sand at the edge of the water on Balboa Island. The day sapphire jeweled and embraced by soft breezes. My sister was running along side me, and Jen was sitting on the seawall in an 80s fluorescent bikini, her impossibly curly hair piled on her head in an MTV type bouffant. She was smiling slyly at me in a way that told me wed be naked and washing ocean salt off each other in a lukewarm shower later. And then my father stepped up on the seawall. I circled back and found myself racing towards him. He never did imitations very well, but he held up his hand like Groucho Marx with a cigar and said, You never had it so good. I kind of jogged in place and replied hesitantly, Dad...am I doing it right? He looked at me with eyes that I miss every day, nestled in a face that many remember, and said, You love well. Keep at it. YOU NEVER LET ROCK BOTTOM RISE TO MEET YOU. And I took off running..like the opening scene of Chariots of Fire. And woke up. And there were my two legs pistoning away. I should run more. But Ill happily walk the dog and think about what was, what is, Dad, my wife & beautiful family, friends everywhere, missed chances, well executed plans, potential, love, and the future.
