I had a rare treat last night. I went to Kellys in Nags Head to see the Good Humor Band. I had the pleasure of running sound for this band for a stint in 1979 while living in Richmond. What I didnt know then that I do know now, is how fortunate I was to have been associated with such a great group of musicians. There is not a band or celebrity at my place in time last night, that could possibly have meant more to me than being able to see these guys play once more after 35 years. Last night was one of the defining moments in life as I grow older, that make you sit down and realize life is truly grand. I did not take more than a fair share of their time, as they had many friends and acquaintances there I had to share them with, I was happy to have this few minutes with them. As I greeted and chatted briefly with Gregg Wetzel, Michael McAdam, Joe McGlohon and Drake Leonard (Drake, sorry I missed you last night. Wanted to say hi and shake your hand but I couldnt find you), I noticed although we have all grown older, somehow during these short moments I was thrown back to 1979 and nothing had really changed at all. They were exactly the way I remember them. I have been fortunate in my life as I have shared the stage with and been friends or acquaintances with many fine musicians. As I listened to them perform last night, it dawned on me that these guys are of the best I have known. I could rattle on about each one, but briefly, Gregg Wetzel, an outstanding honky tonk, ivory rattling rock n roll piano monster, Michael McAdam, an accurate, imaginative guitarist that has seasoned greatly through the years. Michael, Im going out on a limb on this one, but not since having witnessed Duane Allman play, have I been so impressed with another guitarists slide performance (this is not a debating point with me, I have the video to prove it). Joe McGlohon, a familiarity so intense with a tenor saxophone, you give the instrument a voice all its own, humble many great players and being a great individual as a person, no more can I add. Drake Leonard, undoubtedly one of the best bass guitarists, period. I was so amazed with the precise execution of foundation delivered by him and David Eggleston (who was not in the band when I met them), that I immediately understood what was missed when David left the band. Drake Leonard and David Eggleston playing together is nothing short of rhythm section magic, hands down. There were other musicians who joined them, Jimmy Morgan and the rest who I did not get the names of and so much wish I could have met, but time did not allow it. Thank you so very much for your support of the part of Good Humor Band that I do know. Thank you gentlemen, for a wonderful, never to be forgotten evening of entertainment. Wether it will be again in this lifetime, or far, far away on the eternal journey, until we meet again... ; >)
