I had an interesting conversation with an elderly lady this week who has known me since I was a child. We were talking about my Grief work and how I have been assisting the victims of the Westgate Mall terrorist attack. I talked about how it has helped that I lost Jen through suicide in that it has blessed me with deep empathy and insight into how these victims are feeling ... Her response was ... But your loss was a long time ago now ... ! (8 years) This elderly lady, by virtue of her age - in her early 80s) obviously has lost friends, cousins, aunts and uncles, parents and siblings over time ... so she knows about loss and grieving .... ? SO it would appear would appear that it takes having lost a child to understand that empathy and insight dont get forgotten over time .... ?
