I had an interesting conversation yesterday with a National Party supporter and as I’ve said previously, I’m more than willing to listen and gain insight in to why people support any cause. When it’s a political party specific reasons in conjunction with their policies are preferred. The conversation that followed really surprised me! She literally said “I’m not interested in society, education, the environment or poverty because it doesn’t affect me. I know it’s terrible but all I care about is that the National Party has introduced tax cuts for my husband who earns in the top 10% income bracket”. What I found even more surprising is that her husband works in the Public Sector and is a left wing supporter! I understand the motivation behind her decision and subsequently I had nothing of value to add to the conversation or atleast nothing that her husband hadnt already expressed. I’d like to add that this person is great company and I often engage in interesting conversations with her. However I think this outlines a major social issue and self-centred attitude that we must remedy before a complete social collapse eventuates.
