I had an interesting experience today. I went into the store that cannot be named in need of about 7 things on my list (popsicles for my dads birthday, and his students, being one of them). One of the things on the list was lithium grease. Hadnt a clue where to find it. I called the local furniture store that told me it was what I needed to get my dresser drawers gliding properly. An average looking guy in a navy blue shirt that was well fed and super kind overheard my phone call as I was stopped there in the aisle and when I got off the phone said Do you need help finding that? Turns out, he was a store employee, though I couldnt see his name because his badge was flipped around. He proceeded to take me over to the auto parts section of the store and pulled a can of white lithium grease off the shelf and hand it to me. He quickly pulled it back, put it back and gave me another jar. This is the same stuff, but its less expensive... itll do just the same. It cost less than $4. A few minutes later I was still wandering around looking for the salt and pepper shakers. Lost. When suddenly I hear can I help you find something else? Same employee. Well, actually Im looking for the S&P Shakers and straws. You know, colored straws, usually have stripes on them? Oh yes, theyre over here... On the other side of the store. So we went walking. And started talking. I asked him about his job, how he liked working there, if they paid him enough to actually LIVE on... and if he didnt mind me asking... Do most Wal-Mart employees have to get food stamps b/c they only get PT hours, or if they do work full time, dont get benefits? He smiled and started telling me about his job. As it turns out, the first employee of the Aberdeen Wal-Mart store, still works there. A kind greeter. He has worked there for over five years, and has worked his way up, by being a dependable employee and working hard. Admittedly, I had judged him, but as he genuinely answered my question, I was humbled by his willingness to respond. I asked him if I could share his story. He consented. He drives a BMW and pays his house payment. His significant other, also a Wal Mart employee and he make it just fine. I was really happy to hear it.
