I had an interesting experience today while waiting for my sick god daughter to come to her middle schools office. The secretary and I struck up small talk about the students and the carefree life they currently enjoy. Because Im black I suppose, the white secretary remarked how much society has changed and had I seen the movie, The Butler. I said I had and I agreed with her that is was an inspiring movie how it depicted Black peoples existence in America prior to 60s civil rights legislation. We also agreed that institutionalized discrimination was deplorable and that the country has not yet reached MLKs dream. But then I said to her, why dont people focus on how far this country has come from those times instead of focusing on the past? America has evolved from slavery to having A black president. She looked at me with absolute amazement like someone had slapped her in the face with a cold, dead fish and said I have never thought of if that way! Youre right, we are the only country on Earth that could have our countrys history of slavery and still come as far as we have as a nation. The sad thing is this woman views me as some philosophical sage when I only pointed out to her what all of you already know.
