I had gotten quite used to seeing less. I mean, lesser and lesser - TopicsExpress

I had gotten quite used to seeing less. I mean, lesser and lesser by the day. For eight godawful years. The world gradually had become a hazy blob. Details lost, contrast gone for a toss and no amount of squinting and blinking would make me recognise anyone beyond five feet of distance. Diabetic Retinopathy. The process could only be slowed by LASER treatment but it’s a disease that was definitely taking me towards total blindness. Meanwhile, deterioration of the eyes, in spite of periodic LASER interventions, was fast and furious. Been eight years. I was exiled from printed words. Even reading from a laptop or a Kindle became tougher by the day. (Why must they use light grey fonts for chrissake!) Yes, eight years. It took eight years for the docs to realise that it was not retinopathy but cataract which was blocking my vision. Got one of my eyes operated for cataract last month and the world has instantly changed. It’s an amazingly different world suddenly, knocking me off totally. Whoa! The world has always been as detailed and as sharp while I was not looking? Today, the other eye will be operated on. Wish me well. See you soon. In detail. Next time, someone tells you, you have retinopathy, go see another doc. Just to be sure.
