I had just moved to Aurora, CO. in 1992. My friend at the time told me that there was this cat that I had to see play. Told me that the kid could play for the Pistons RIGHT NOW! Obviously, I was skeptical. What I witnessed that evening was a 16 year old Chauncey Billups, then only a Junior in high school. He possessed a grown mans game. Ill never forget it. It was GW vs. Montbello. GW was down and I watched this cat calmly walk the ball up the court as the clock was winding down. He pulled up maybe two or three steps past half court and let a shot go. Not a heave, a regular shot. All net. Next possession, he calmly backs someone down and destroys him too. I left that game thinking yeah, this cat could play for the Pistons. RIGHT NOW. I became even more impressed with him when running into him or playing at the Hiawatha Davis Rec Center or the Y on Alameda. He was cool, collected, down to Earth. He seemed like he knew the talent he had but was humble enough that he didnt feel the need to remind anyone of it. We all know of his professional career and the Chips he brought to Motown. But I want to say this. The point guard we had in Detroit that made us Champions again is, in my Opinion, the second greatest athlete in Colorado history; and the #1 home grown athlete of all time in CO. If there was a Mt. Rushmore for Colorado athletics, hes on it. Thanks for a ood run Chauncey. Congrats on an stellar career! #Salute
