I had my follow up with the ENT this afternoon. We talked about my voice and airway and believe weve reached a reasonable compromise. Maybe slightly leveraged to the voice side of the scale. The plan is for me to see what the limits are of my current airway and decide whether it will be sufficient to support my expectations and lifestyle. If not, we can cut away some more vocal cord. The only complication is that I have pretty significant sleep apnea. Apparently its a common occurrence after someone has had a trach for an extended time. So the plan is to get started on a diet and exercise program. I see the sleep center on September 15th. Probably end up with a cpap machine. If I can get some weight off, that should help with the apnea. If I can improve my cardio, that will help me make better more efficient use of the airway and the air it provides. I just have to figure out how to push myself while still fighting the pain and limitations from the rib, shoulder, and back injuries. So much fun ahead! So, it appears Ive won the airway battle. I can already move faster for longer than I could with the trach or t tube. Its not perfect, but Ill have to find its limits and force them back at the gym.
