I had tears in my eyes after reading this... Omotoyosi Ogunbanwo You know, women in Nigeria go through a lot of shit. I would not teach my daughter to cook because no man would marry her if she cant cook. I would teach her to cook because its healthy for her to eat her own food. I wont teach my daughter to be neat because no man would marry her if she is dirty, I would teach her to be neat because cleanliness is next to Godliness. I would not teach my daughter to dress well because no man would look at her if she doesnt, I would teach her to dress well, so that she can be confident. Because what you wear has a great impact on your confidence. I would not teach my daughter to study because no man would marry a liability, I would teach her to study because education is important. No matter what you do, its important to be educated. Have a degree and be the woman you hope to be. Any body that tells my daughter she is less than a woman for not being married at 25, would get the world best thunderous slap from me. I would teach my daughters to be confident and smart. I would teach them that a man is meant to compliment you not complete you! I might not be the world best mother, but I would definitely raise the world best daughters. My thinking is different from an average Nigerian. I was chatting with a friend of mine yesterday night, and she said she is already tired of staying at home. She just finished her youth service and has been working for a few months, but her mum has been hammering her about her introduction. She would be 24 this year. You know I felt so sad for her. She is going to kill me when she sees this post but I just have to make it. She told me something that got me very mad and upset. I was studying then I felt really unhappy. She said right now, she is desperate to get married even if it means it would shut her mum up. Gosh!!!!! This is someone that was telling me she hasnt saved up to 100,000 naira. Why is our culture like that? I renounce a culture that teaches my daughters to be less than a man. A renounce a culture that makes my daughters desperate! Apart from her, I have so many friends that tells me that when they were younger and they make mistakes, their parents ask them that is this the way you want to behave in your husbands house??? The fear of marriage is now in so many womens mind that it is all they live for. SMH. The rate of divorce in my generation would be so alarming. We train our daughters to believe that without marriage they are incomplete. You should train them that without success, they are incomplete. Marriage should come afterwards not before. Thank God for my parents. They have always made me realise success comes before not after. I know I can not change everyones mindset. At least Im different. Thats all that matters. So many young girls cry to sleep every night because they think they wont get married. Thats your headache. If you die of depression, na your life. My daughters are going to be strong independent women. Who knows that men are important, but that their life isnt tied to one! ############################### If you are a mother, and after reading this, your mindset doesnt change for good, hmmmm! These words sure do move mountain
