I had the honor of working for Carl Sagan mentioned here. Poster boy for atheists everywhere. He was actually an agnostic. Neither believing or disbelieving due to a lack of scientific evidence. Whenever he would appear on Johnny Carson or even world news someone would almost always ask him if he found any evidence yet to which he would reply with some explanation, being sure science will someday be advanced enough to know. Before he died there was a news conference that interrupted regular programming as the world listened he stated there is no evidence of God however, knowing what he does and with everything as vast as it is and never having even found the evidence of any other life in the universe he said. The earth and the universe had to be the direct result of intelligent design Thats as close as he would come to admitting there is a God of the universe. Why this was always a topic affiliated with him I dont know I do know I feel he spent his entire career searching for evidence of God in the heavens. The universe is vastly larger than he could have imagined even with his billions of billions statement everyone loved so much.
