I had the pleasure of attending an inspirational meeting held for Principals by Chancellor Carmen Fariña and Mayor De Blasio last night at Brooklyn Tech HS. Chancellor Fariña stated she will oversee family engagement and hold more efficient trainings for parent coordinators. Mayor De Blasio alluded to endeavoring together to nurture our children and spoke to college and career: Education determines economic destiny. He spoke about the Pre-K expansion need and possibly more funding for after school programs. The first lady of NY, his wife Chirlane, spoke about the importance of helping students understand the options they have. Chancellor Fariña announced her new cabinet members: Dorita Gibson, previously the Deputy Chancellor for Equity and Access, will assume the role of Senior Deputy Chancellor and the Chancellor’s second in command. Chancellor Fariña also appointed Phil Weinberg, previously the principal at the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology in Brooklyn, as Deputy Chancellor for Teaching and Learning. In one of his first acts as Deputy Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Mr. Weinberg named Anna Commitante as his Executive Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Professional Development.
