I had the pleasure of hearing Mark Pincus, founder and chairman of Zynga Inc. speak about innovation a few nights ago. He said something simple yet profound I took away and want to share with you. He said the successful innovators and entrepreneurs he knows trust their instincts about what customers need and where opportunities exist in the marketplace to do something new. However, he also said that they are more skeptical and cautions about their ideas about how to exploit this opportunity. They recognize that there is usually a need to iterate and test ideas to find the best way to exploit their instinct. A great dichotomy and one we should all keep in mind. In my own career I found that our big successes usually came from version 2 or 3 as we iterated to find the idea that would work best.
