I had two boards, one cut to 16 lengths and one cut to 18 lengths - TopicsExpress

I had two boards, one cut to 16 lengths and one cut to 18 lengths (as per plans), and needed 3/4 holes drilled into them, centered about 1 1/2 from the edge. I used a DeWalt drill with a 3/4 bit, secured each board to the work surface, and drilled holes in each one. Each of the lengths split down the middle, either with the first or the second hole drilled. Thats about $20 worth of wood, wasted. Plus, on the last one, the tip bit down into the wood, then caught on... something?... and pretty much flew out of my hands (and turned off, and didnt hit anyone, thank G*D). What did I do wrong? And, more importantly, may I please borrow someones table saw or secured-down saw and drill press, next time Im courageous enough to attempt this project?
