I hardly update my status but this morning I have been compelled to do so as I listen to the fees that universities will be charging for the 2013/2014 academic year. I feel very sad about this turn of events particulary because Governments have F A I L E D to put in place systems that will adequately address the plight of the less privileged student. I know some people would quickly mention the SSNIT Loan as one of the interventions to address the plight of the less privileged student. But is the SSNIT Loan enough considering the exhorbitant fees being charged by these universities?? Assuming it is enough are there systems that would employ graduates after completion to enable them repay the loans?? How many of these poor students can even get guarantors of this loan?? The University of Ghana for instance is trying with its Student Financial Aid Office to help these students. But how many of these students can they support annually?? Yes the Mahama led Government has also taken a step in this regard by setting up a Scholarships Office at the C A S T LE. But how many MOBROWAS can walk to that SO CALLED SCHOLARSHIPS OFFICE and access scholarships considering the level of nepotism and political cronism in the country?? Even where the scholarships are open, they are only available to students who want to read so called C R I T I C A L C O U R S E S and not necessarily the less privileged. Is it every who can and should read S C I E N C E?? Well, I believe as young people these are some of the issues we should match our leaders on B O O T F O R BOOT! Aluta Continua!
