I hate it when people on the radio get it all wrong!! While driving to work, a blurb 96.1 Sox in Lancaster on the news was about legislation to open adoption records here in PA, which we hope will be passed. The person reading the news said that it would no longer allow birth parents to hide behind the law....so wrong!! I couldnt call into the station, but posted the following on their facebook page: Yesterday morning during the news, the topic of the current legislation for opening adoption records was in a news segment, in which it was stated that parents could no longer hide behind the closed records. The focus of opening adoption records is not to expose birth parents but to finally give adoptees the rights that every other person enjoys in the country. Many adoptees cannot get passports because their amended birth certificates are filed more than a year after their birth (these certificates remove the name the adoptee was given at birth as well as the birth parents names and these are replaced with the adoptees new name and their adoptive parents names) and homeland security will not issue passports to anyone whose birth certificates were issued more than 12 months after the birth of a child. The same is true for many adoptees having trouble getting or being denied drivers licenses or renewing them because of this policy. Our birth certificates do not have a physicians signature because adoptees werent born: they exist because a judge signed adoption papers granting custody of the child to the adoptive parents. We dont know our medical histories or ethnic makeups. The majority of birth parents want to make contact with the children; many were forced to give up or were taken from them. The laws sealing adoption records were put into place to protect the adoptive parents from birth parents, not to protect the birth parents. I think it would be great to have an adoptee and birth parent on the show to discuss the legislation so that your listeners can understand the reasons behind the legislation and why it is so important. I wonder if theyll allow the comment to stay up on their page!!
