I hate it when people who are socially lazy and let fear dictate their social engagement call themselves INTROVERTS. Its okay, even natural, to be afraid of people, but dont turn necessity into virtue. Did you know that I spent four years of my life where I did not utter a word to another human being? When I finally did start to speak again I realized I had developed a speech impediment. But I didnt call myself an INTROVERT. I just realized I was letting fear run my life. When one calls themselves an introvert, they usually imply superiority. They might say something like I prefer books to people. Im more of an introvert. Which of course implies that they are more educated and less needy than extroverts. The dictionary defines introvert as a shy, reticent and SELF-CENTERED person. It IS self-centered to go where people are and not participate. Participation is an invisible contract we all sign that says We are all here. We all have anxiety, but we are all going to talk and be awkward until it doesnt feel so awkward anymore. Me, sitting over here with my arms crossed not participating is making everyone uncomfortable so Im going to get over my fear. Im going to smile and Im going to try. Rather you are an introvert or an extrovert, it is scary and overwhelming to go out and be around groups of people, sometimes. Dont give yourself a label that limits yourself. Swallow the lump in your throat, smile and introduce yourself. Chances are you arent really an introvert anyway. Theres a pretty good chance that youre just a judgmental prick. #unneededhashtags
