I have a conundrum (complete brick wall) in my family. My ggrandfather, John Berten Nichols (1868-1952 in Oconee County, SC) is a complete mystery. His father, Im 90% sure, was J. Adams Ridley (originally from NC). His mother, was Nancy (unknown) The problem is that they did not raise him (or his brothers and sisters). He bounced from place to place. At one point he lived with Nancy Medlin and the rest of his brothers and sisters. At another point he lived with Nancy and Mike Medlins family. Mike called him his children, but clearly they werent. I have since found a cousin that descends from his sister. Her story was something about the Nichols taking them in so they took their name. Ive had my DNA tested with Ancestry, Ftdna, and 23andMe. Not a Medlin shows up anywhere so I dont think Im a Medlin. Any ideas how I could possibly find out what his real surname was? How can you search when you know nothing.
