I have a copy of Heroes Behind the Badge. I recommend it to anyone in the field, their families and also to those that "hate cops". For us, and our families, there will be 90 minutes of reverent silence-as you recognize some of the faces, names, situations....or memorial services. For the others, perhaps an awakening. An epiphany, in which you realize that these total strangers, men and women with families and loved ones just like yours, who muster unimaginable courage, putting their fears aside, running headlong into Hell on Earth-for you. We are human. We feel, hurt, bleed, cry, and die just as any other human does; we feel anger when investigating a rape, we hurt when we see the cruelty that human beings are capable of, our blood runs crimson, our armor only protects so much, we cry when innocent children suffer torment or worse, and we die-in violence by way of natural disaster, inattentive drivers, or evil men. For my family, blue and blood-be safe out there.
