I have a different relationship with every story I write. Some I fall in love with immediately. Some start with uncertainty. Some start with eagerness or a vague sense of potential. And then theres The Art of Losing Yourself, which releases in April. For a long while, I did not have happy feelings toward this story. It seemed to bring out a whole host of not-so-fun emotions--insecurity, frustration, weariness. But something funny is happening as I work on line edits. Like a flower slowly blossoming, Im falling in love. Excitement is building. Warmth is growing. Im starting to think that maybe writing this story in the valley, maybe the nights of uncertainty, the pulling out of the hair, will ultimately make me all the fonder of these characters and their journey. Do you find that the more difficult something is, the more you end up caring? Or am I crazy?
