I have a friend whos screwy - and thats rich coming from me - but he comes up with random crap and today he dared me to drop the word butthole in a conversation with a client. Ive got clients who would think its funny but today wasnt going to be a day to see any of them. I like a challenge. I like to win. As long as Im not endangering myself or anyone around me, Ill get freaky to win a bet. Today I had 4 meetings. One was phase 2 of the install for an engineer and his wife who Ive become familiar enough that his 3 year old son calls me Mistevieous. (He made it up himself and but didnt get the irony - I love it.) I dont make bathroom jokes around them and I leash the part of me thats not necessarily wrong but not professional either. At the end of our meeting Im looking for a door in the floor, anything at all to drop the b-hole bomb without it seeming so random that it would weird him out. I mean I didnt want to say My b-hole itches. Part of the fun is how its presented. So when we were taking about a surround for his trash cans, I suggested a hedge and as he was considering it, I said, But Andy, look around the neighborhood - trash cans are like buttholes, everyone has one. He just stared at me and busted out laughing in this great Scottish accent and suddenly didnt feel so bad about his trash cans. I sold him on the idea of the hedge and he left laughing. I like it when that happens. I won the dare, he left laughing and I showed him a little side of me that made everything a little more real.
