I have a hard time saying no to people and things that demand my time, focus, and energy! Anyone else have this problem?? Im working on it though. --Thinking you are a bad person for saying no is a symptom of the disease to please. Saying yes when you need to say no causes burnout. You do yourself and the person making the request a disservice by saying yes all of the time, says author Duke Robinson. God created us with the freedom to say yes and say no. But as Paul reminds us, we don’t always know how to use this freedom very well. We often say yes when what we really wish we could say is no, or we say no when we really wish we could say yes. Not being able to say no sometimes makes saying a true yes even harder. We have to learn how to say NO sometimes to people whom we love, and to things that we do want to do — based upon a compassionate comprehension of the limitations of our own energies, time, and emotional capacity. Sometimes I must gently refuse even some things which appeal to me, so that I can focus my limited human attention not only on what is important, but on what is possible. And yet, I can’t trust myself to consistently say no or yes when I need to. I can’t trust myself to always make decisions that will make me the healthy, loving, unselfish, and joyful person God in Christ invites me to be. So saying yes and saying no is a spiritual discipline—something I must practice to grow closer to God in Christ. In the end, it’s Christ who fills in the gaps, Christ who can step in and give me grace, because Christ walks with me. As Paul goes on to say, God justifies and Christ intercedes for us—and nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ.
