I have a huge respect for modern farming. My dad was raised on a farm and has told me several times about what it took to stay ahead of the weeds on the farm. My grandfathers plan was to work the ground 7 times before planting. Then cultivate another 3 times after the crop came up. Even with that, the fields had lots of weeds competing with the crop. If we count that up its 7 times before planting, 1 time for planting, maybe one more for fertilizing, then 3 times for cultivating. That is 12 times over the field. Fuel costs were under 1/10th of what they are today. Imagine the cost of our food today if farmers had to revert to this method. Like it or not, round up (glyphosate) has revolutionized farming. They can raise clean crops with just a couple passes over the field. Without the weeds the crop can make use of all the nutrients, so less fertilizer. Fertilizer is also a petroleum product. Not having to work the soil preserves the top soil. Much less exposure to erosion. Ive seen lots of posts about this on FB. GMO (genetically modified organism) crops that have had round up resistance added are feeding the world now. Weve been modifying crops by cross breading for thousands of years. Without this incredible invention we would seriously have millions starving to death in the world due to fuel cost. If you dont like it, dont eat it. But please dont push to outlaw it.
