I have a hypothetical question, as Ive always been a bit unclear on barrier frustration. I also dont believe of course that dogs bark aggressively out of some loyalty to protect their owner, or doing their job of protecting the family by barking outside in the yard. I understand one explanation of barrier frustration, which is when the dog is barking at something outside the fence/car/crate but its not really an aggressive bark, its frustrated cos it wants to get out, and if its released it will play/greet nicely. But what about a situation where youre driving along, maybe stopped at the lights, your dog sees another, and barks aggressively? (This has happened with LeeJay in the past, and Ill never know if he would have been fine if Id let him out, but Im not talking about him, this is hypothetical). Reason this has come up is because in a thread below, someone was saying their dog is fine at the dog park but as soon as they get into the car they will bark at any dog going past. One suggestion was barrier frustration, dog barking cos wants to get back out of car to dogs, and another was like hero barking, like Yeah thats right, Im in MY car, bugger off, you!. So I get the frustrated cos wants to get back out of car, but what about the other hero barking? Why? And also, in this situation (or if it was behind dogs own fence at home), if the dog was barking aggressively, growling, maybe lunging too, what about that? Ive seen many many dogs going off their faces behind their fences or looking through their windows when we pass. Can I assume that most of those dogs are DA when not behind a barrier? If not, why not?
