I have a new respect for the Joplin Police Department (and all police) after working with them at road crossings for races. Talk about a thankless job. These guys get cursed at, flipped off, argued with, completely disrespected, and bumped by cars. It really comes to some reality when you see all these cars traveling through at night. Imagine walking up to a car load of people in a dark place in the middle of the night, and the car load of people dont want to be caught. Thats a pressure cooker. One of the officers on traffic post this weekend went after a car that nearly hit a runner and pinned a $1,000 fine on him. The public in Joplin better wake up and realize that runners and cyclists are becoming an ever increasing dynamic in this community, and the JPD is helping make that a safer thing to be done. The next time you get angry for getting pulled over for speeding, just remember your foot is on the gas pedal. Are all police officers good guys? Nope! Some dont need to be doing what they do, but there are bad apples in every profession. Im sure its rare for JPD to get a compliment, but it sure wouldnt hurt to say thank you to guys that risk their lives to keep us safe. Just remember they are human.
