I have a secret to share: Laurens actual birthday (Saturday) was a horrible day! The party today (Sunday) was great, but the day that preceded it was a disaster. I share this tale because I think all too often facebook is filled with bragging, but life with kids aint always a bed of roses. I awoke Saturday morning to find Lauren had drawn all over her new bed and the wall behind it. I had a serious chat with her and confiscated the writing implements from her room. Later that day, when I made her wash the walls, I saw little tiny white balls in the carpet. I asked what those were and she told me that while she was making snowflakes with scissors - she cut open a pillow. She led me to a corner in her room where there was a giant pile of teeny tiny styrofoam beads. I made this discovery with 1.5 hours until family came over for the family birthday party. I was upset, but it was likely a mistake, so no punishment. Then, as I start to clean all the beads - by removing EVERYTHING from her room, stripping her bed and vacuuming - I find snippets of hair and fabric, then more, and more, and more. She had cut the hair off many barbies/ponies/stuffies and had cut up the dresses on many of them. Worst of all - many of the toys she cut up were *just* given to her for Christmas. I was livid but remained calm, talked to her about it and for the first time - grounded her (no screens for a week). She cried and cried and cried at this news. Lauren is SUCH a great kid - Ive maybe given her 2 time outs in her entire life, so all this was a shock (to her and I)! I think the cause of all the mayhem was pure exhaustion. She has been staying up until at least 11pm every night for the past 2 weeks - just too excited about everything and she went off the rails. Then, hubby comes home, sticks his finger in the glitter on the cupcakes, tastes it - and we discover its craft glitter. See full story in my bday pics. Then, to end the family dinner, we go to sing Happy Birthday to Lauren and shes so upset by the cupcake fiasco that she has an utter meltdown - sliding underneath the table, screaming at the top of her lungs while family sings and Colin blows out her candles. Happy birthday Lauren! Lets hope the rest of year 6 goes better!
