I have an idea. In order to qualify to run for any major office - mayor, governor, senator, representative, etc. - you must show that you have spent at least 6 months as a "working poor" person. You must exist on minimum wage and food stamps and deal with not having proper health insurance, a car (too expensive for many) or adequate public transportation. No help from family or friends. You must do this in the state or city you hope to represent. (I would be willing to accept some evidence of empathy as a substitute, but most of our current leaders, at least in Indiana and much of Congress, seem to have been born without it.) Finally, I would require that the candidate then pass a test proving he or she has read and at least somewhat understands the Constitution.
