I have an update on what is happening at Canowindra railway station and yard - The BEOutThere UNSW students for the facility of Built Environment will be back in town this weekend from Friday to Sunday afternoon. As part of the BEOutThere program, students from UNSW Facility of the Built environment will be returning to Canowindra again looking at the Canowindra Rail Precinct. The structure of the BE OutThere initiatives are about engaging with communities and providing students with a opportunity to work with a client in an inter-disciplinary setting. The client in this case, being the Canowindra community, Cabonne Council, John Holland Group (CRN) and community stakeholders such as the Business Chamber, Historical Society, Age of Fishes Museum. The disciplines of the students will be range from planners , landscape architects, architects, through to interior architects and industrial designers. The intent of the course is to explore possibilities for the use of the precinct, and finding ways of giving it back to the community as a public domain as well acknowledging the historical context of the rail and grain handling. This time last year, the first group of students looked at establishing a scoping brief, and in the process of researching and surveying the community and site , various themes were established, that highlighted the potential and opportunities for the site. One of these was the Historical and cultural aspects, taking into consideration the significance of the precinct. Various presentations where made from the respective stakeholders including Lachlan Valley Rail by Lawrence Ryan and Eddy Wilkinson. Other aspects considered were the historical, environmental and agricultural themes In this initial outputs ,the students came up with a broad range of responses and we are currently establishing how we present this first part of the course back to the community. If some of these present plausible options for exploration, they will form part of the course to be run this semester. The opportunity will be for this new group of students to present some of the briefs that were established by the previous students and for you to raise questions and suggestions of this group.
