I have another story I am writing, and I have written more than this, but I am putting it into small parts based upon events so that it is not too intimidating to read. Criticism/comments wanted, I am trying to practice to become an author, after all. ((Untitled)) (Medieval Fantasy) (Murder/Crime) The audible crunch of boot and gravel sent a low echo about the dampened breeze. A coated wanderer strolled assuredly through powerful gusts of wind, whose gloved hand securely grasped the handle of a large, maroon case. His face was but a shadow under the glint of the moon’s evanescence, yet the shine of the rainfall reflected an image of sternness. Between his auburn bangs was a look of strong curiosity, and a desire for harsh justice goaled in his determined eyes. His collected clothing displayed neither a peasant nor a man of snobbish royalty, but a detective devoted to his career. Approaching his destination, the investigator tilted his head as he stepped before a recently abandoned house; it was a structure defined by perfect symmetry, and its glossy wood of the smoothest bark glistened as it caught droplets of the downpour. The artifice stood tall at three stories, each floor containing large quantities of windows that could almost be mistaken for mirrors. It was here, Sebastian observed, that he would find and disclose the evidence to mark the man or woman who killed the royal Hubel family. The Hubels were a well-known people for their ancestors’ medicinal studies of various herbs, which had led them to acquire extreme wealth. Their fortune would have lasted their children half a dozen generations, had they lived long enough to inherit such a number. Some nights previous, however, Sebastian was informed that the entire family of five was murdered; the intentions, as well as the suspects were unknown. This case earned the summoning of Sebastian, who promised the Hubel’s neighbors that the culprits would not escape the law, nor would they see a free life without some consequences for their actions. Silently entering the house, Sebastian wrinkled his nose at the lingering acrid scent of blood and obstructed flesh. It was a foul smell indeed, not one that Sebastian could ever picture in a home flourished with decorated furniture that appeared more expensive than some peoples’ abodes. Careful not to tamper with any possible evidence via clumsy displacement, Sebastian placed his case in a vacant spot on the floor, opening it up to reveal an array of investigative tools. He grabbed an object of peculiar shape, a crystal sphere no larger than the size of the detective’s palm. Inside the vial was a winged sprite, a neon-hued creature that could nearly be mistaken for a common wasp mutated by an enlarged size. Seeking freedom, the tiny creature tapped inaudibly against the transparent walls of glass, repeating the process without any sign of intending to give up. Sebastian shook the object for a few moments, and the sprite illuminated like a spark of lightning, causing Sebastian to flinch. Then, after some calming, the pixie’s lit body relaxed to a faint glow, good enough for the investigator to sight more than just the mist of his breath. Holding up the glowing orb, Sebastian immediately noted that the living room appeared untouched by any act of violence. Though his eyes were keen, Sebastian chose to take extra caution in his observation, and thus removed from his case a flask containing a green gaseous substance. Though he despised the use of a witch’s crafts, Sebastian knew it was efficient to use faerie equipment as well as his skilled senses. He tossed the vile to the ground, causing it to shatter, and the gas inside diffused instantly. Sebastian looked around the room as he had before and, shining the fairy’s light on the staircase, he saw that there were a number of small spots on the steps glowing with painful brightness. The magical substance was doing its job well, Sebastian thought, swallowing his pride in knowing that he would not have spotted such small droplets of blood with his human eyes. Following the evidence of potential murder, Sebastian did not hesitate to hastily climb the stairs to the second floor. The top of the staircase displayed a discomforting, narrow hallway. The boards of the ground were stained with blood, yet it was more apparent in the eastern hallway. This naturally attracted the investigator’s attention, leading him to investigate every room in the right hemisphere. Near disappointment, Sebastian had found no evidence leading towards the identity of the murderer, until he noticed some puddles of blood soaking the bed sheets in the master bedroom. The feminine decorations and lightly shaded colors suggested that this was Lady Hubel’s quarters. This was no doubt where one of the murders took place, Sebastian observed, basing his conclusion on the sheer amount of blood as well as the displaced sheets of the bed. There was an obvious struggle that had occurred, and the conclusion was a mess– large droplets of blood scattered about the floor and walls, the sheets ravaged to mere pieces of cloth. Wondering if the victim had ever escaped the confines of her bed, Sebastian transferred his attention to the floor, noticing random splatters of bodily fluids painted upon the wooden surface. Upon a more cautious glance, the investigator drew forth a pattern, the stains of streaking blood present on both sides of the bed, appearing to have been splattered a further distance with each blow inflicted upon the victim. “The blood travels nearly across the room,” Sebastian mumbled lowly, “and it stretches a length a blunt weapon has no capability of performing.” Weighing his options, Sebastian thought that the killing had to be done with a blade of some sort– perhaps a falchion. A moment later, he shook his head and revised his theory. He thought instead the blade would have be a lengthy one of as versatile sort. The detective stood in wonder, pondering back when he was summoned to take a gander at the corpse.
