I have avoided making any comment on this story for the past week or so, as I just couldnt find adequate words that would approach my feelings of horror... and I still cant... Even the reporting in this Irish Times article seems amazingly tame. The story was making the rounds in other arenas before it even got scant mention by the national carrier... If the Church in Ireland (or anywhere) wants to be really taken seriously... it needs to, without hesitation, throw itself upon the mercy of the people (rather like it would have people throw themselves upon the mercy of Jesus himself).. It needs to put all its cards on the table... all the dirty laundry (and laundry institutions)... it needs to truly atone... it seems incapable of doing so, as the hand wringing and financial protectionism of the past decade has illustrated. The central call of Christianity seems to me, to be... Love thy neighbor (all thy neighbors)... not... beat thy neighbor into moral submission; circle the wagons and call a lawyer when the shit hits the fan... The Church needs to empty its pockets and get back to humility... And just to make my thoughts clear (not my feelings... still cant touch those yet) The Catholic Church in Ireland have been the slave masters for Jesus and have been involved in a systematic criminal enterprise, with a body count to make mob families blush; all enabled by successive governments riding the coat-tails of power (I think Im beginning to get there... I should stop now... its a family show) Tear down the walls..! (Thank you Roger Waters) irishtimes/news/social-affairs/call-for-state-apology-over-tuam-mother-and-baby-home-scandal-1.1820349
